Sleep Calculator

Calculate the best bedtime or wake-up time.

📐 Based on 90-minute sleep cycles plus ~15 minutes to fall asleep. Waking at the end of a cycle (not mid-cycle) tends to feel less groggy.

Sleep quality depends not just on duration but on completing full sleep cycles. Each sleep cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes and consists of light sleep, deep sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Waking up mid-cycle — especially from deep sleep — causes sleep inertia: that groggy, disoriented feeling that can last hours. This sleep calculator tells you the best times to wake up or go to sleep based on 90-minute cycle alignment, so you always wake up at the lightest stage of sleep.

📋 How to Use This Calculator

Enter either your intended wake-up time (to find the best bedtimes) or your current time (to find the best wake-up times if you go to sleep now). The calculator adds approximately 15 minutes to fall asleep and then shows 4–6 wake-up options at 90-minute intervals — each representing the end of a complete sleep cycle. Choose the option that gives you 5–6 cycles (7.5–9 hours) for optimal rest. 4 cycles (6 hours) is a minimum; fewer than 4 cycles leads to significant sleep debt.

💡 Key Facts & Information

Sleep architecture: a typical night consists of 4–6 sleep cycles of 90 minutes each. Each cycle progresses through NREM Stage 1 (light drowsiness), NREM Stage 2 (true sleep, majority of the night), NREM Stage 3 (deep/slow-wave sleep, most restorative, concentrated in first half of night), and REM sleep (dreaming, memory consolidation, concentrated in second half of night). Adults need 7–9 hours (National Sleep Foundation). Indian adults average only 6.5 hours — significantly below the recommendation. Chronic sleep deprivation impairs cognitive function similarly to alcohol intoxication: 17 hours awake ≈ blood alcohol of 0.05%; 24 hours awake ≈ 0.10%.
